Warning signs
Wisdom teeth are third molars, the last adult teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. When there is not enough room for them to erupt normally they become impacted: partly or fully trapped under the gum or bone. Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no symptoms, but they are harder to clean and more likely to decay or develop gum disease. Call us if you notice:

When removal is needed
Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. If it erupts fully, lines up with the other teeth and can be kept clean, the dentist may simply monitor it. Removal is usually recommended when a wisdom tooth causes problems such as:

The procedure
The exact steps depend on how the tooth is positioned. A fully erupted wisdom tooth may come out much like any other tooth, while an impacted one is a surgical extraction. Either way, the dentist explains the plan before starting.
STEP 01
Local anesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding area so you feel pressure, not sharp pain. For more complex cases, other comfort options are discussed with you beforehand.
STEP 02
If the tooth is still under the gum, a small opening is made in the gum tissue, and any bone blocking the tooth is gently removed.
STEP 03
The tooth is loosened and lifted out. A deeply impacted tooth may be divided into sections so it can come out with less force.
STEP 04
The socket is cleaned of any debris and, if needed, closed with stitches to help it heal.
STEP 05
Gauze is placed over the site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form, which protects the bone while it heals.
Recovery
Most people feel noticeably better within a few days, and the gum usually closes over the next one to two weeks while the bone keeps healing for longer. You will get written instructions, but these basics protect the blood clot and help you heal smoothly.
