Dentist or ER?

Should You Call a Dentist or Go to the ER?

Most tooth problems, including pain, breaks and lost restorations, are best handled by a dentist, while swelling that affects breathing or swallowing belongs in the emergency room. Hospital ERs can manage pain and serious infection, but they generally cannot fix the tooth itself.

SituationBest first step
Toothache, sensitivity or a broken toothCall us for a same-day dental visit
Lost filling or loose crownDental visit within a day or two, sooner if painful
Knocked-out adult toothCome in right away, keeping the tooth moist
Swelling with a bad taste or fever, no breathing troubleSame-day dental visit for infection care
Swelling with trouble breathing or swallowing, or spreading to the eye or neckGo to the ER or call 911 immediately
Jaw injury from a fall or crash, or heavy bleeding that will not stopER first, then see us for the teeth
Safety firstFacial swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or that spreads toward the eye or neck, can become serious quickly. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Self-Care Tips

Tips for Dental Emergencies Before You Leave Sugar Land

Be quick but careful: protect the tooth or appliance, manage pain and swelling simply, and call before you drive. Ignoring a dental emergency can let a manageable problem become a much more serious one.

For pain that flares at night, see our article on severe tooth pain at night.

STEP 01

Save what came out

If a tooth, crown or denture piece is lost or dislocated, collect it carefully and bring it with you.

STEP 02

Manage the pain

Rinse with warm water, floss gently to clear trapped food and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as labeled.

STEP 03

Reduce swelling

Hold a cold compress against the cheek in short intervals. Never place aspirin directly on the gum.

STEP 04

Call ahead

Phone (713) 999-5328 so our team can triage your problem and be ready when you reach Katy.

Treatment

What Emergency Treatment Looks Like for Sugar Land Patients

We diagnose the cause, relieve the pain and aim to preserve your natural tooth, with follow-up visits for any longer-term restoration. If sudden pain comes from an infection inside the tooth, root canal treatment may be part of the plan. A tooth that cannot be saved can be removed gently with a simple extraction, and replacement options such as implants are discussed afterward.
