Oral Surgery & Extractions
Walk-In Dental Clinic at 20919 Kingsland Blvd, Katy, performs surgical tooth extractions for impacted, broken-down and hard-to-reach teeth, with same-day appointments 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth cannot simply be lifted out, so the dentist gently opens the gum or removes a small amount of bone and then closes the site with stitches.
After an exam and X-ray, our dentist will tell you whether your extraction is simple or surgical, what to expect and what it costs before treatment begins. Call (713) 999-5328 and we will have a room ready within your driving time.

Simple vs Surgical
A surgical extraction removes a tooth that is not fully accessible above the gum line, which means the dentist must lift gum tissue, remove some bone or divide the tooth to take it out safely. When a tooth is fully visible and can be removed with forceps, the procedure is a simple extraction. When it has not fully grown in, is broken off or is held tightly by bone, it needs a surgical approach.
Stitches close the site so it heals properly, and your dentist may recommend a specific pain medicine for the days after the procedure.
When It Is Needed
Impacted wisdom teeth are the most common reason, but severely broken teeth, leftover root tips and teeth with long curved roots also often need surgery.
Wisdom teeth often need surgery because cutting through tissue and bone is the only way to reach them. See our wisdom teeth removal page for more detail.

Diagnosis
The decision is made from an exam and an X-ray, which show the position of the tooth, the shape of the roots and the bone around them. You will hear which approach is planned and why before anything begins.

Checks how much of the tooth is visible and how stable it is.
You hear the plan, the recovery and the cost first.
Local anesthetic is used and comfort options are discussed with you.
Step by Step
The area is numbed, the tooth is exposed and removed, and the site is cleaned and stitched, usually in a single visit.
STEP 01
Local anesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue so you feel pressure, not pain.
STEP 02
The dentist makes a small opening in the gum and, if needed, removes a little bone around the tooth.
STEP 03
The tooth is taken out whole or in sections to protect the surrounding bone.
STEP 04
The socket is cleaned and stitched so it can heal properly.
STEP 05
You get written instructions, pain-control advice and a follow-up plan.

Recovery
Most patients feel noticeably better within a few days, though some swelling and soreness are normal at first. Rest for the first day, use ice on the cheek, eat soft foods and avoid straws, spitting and smoking so the blood clot stays in place.
Follow the pain medicine plan your dentist recommends and keep the area clean with gentle salt-water rinses after the first day. Read more about pain after tooth removal and how to manage it.
